Teddy Roosevelt defeats Alton B. Parker
Thanks to D.G. for pointing out that 1904 was an election year.
No, my recent trip to Quebec was not about seeking political asylum, although if Congressman Olver is correct [ http://www.afterdowningstreet.org ] about Bush's plans to invade Iran and suspend elections in '08, maybe planning an escape route while practicing my Quebecois is not such a bad idea. BTW, Rick Santorum [ see www.wonkette.com ] is predicting terrorist attacks in the US that will tip the elections to the Republicans. Make up your minds, people.
In the meantime, while I was in Montreal struggling to discuss William James and the meaning of consciousness, my dear friend Justin was at the Pierre et Gilles exhibition at the Jeu de Paume in Paris. Here is his report:
"As I was walking in, a cute man in a sleeveless t-shirt was flexing his muscles while his friend took his picture by the entrance sign. I stepped aside for the photo op and the photographer said in broken English, 'Go inside and see his picture, best one in show!' The boy added, 'yes go and see, c'est moi!' I said I certainly would. Indeed, inside, there he was, naked in a straw hat, holding a watering can in one hand and his sizable cock in the other, pissing into a flower bed. The French government is to be commended for mounting such a splendid exhibition. Somehow I don't see the National Endowment for the Arts doing the same."
Today's news, duly noted and sent me by Justin, courtesy of the Guardian [ http://www.guardian.co.uk ] citing the Diario de Ibiza, is that police have closed the Amnesia, Bora Bora and DC-10 dance clubs in a "crackdown on Ibiza's drug-fuelled night-life" resulting in cancellations from clubbers from Britain and elsewhere. Ruh roh. I assume this will affect J's subsequent travel plans.
Oh, and not to be outdone, my chum Eduardo [ www.eduardosantiago.com ] just emailed me from Key West, stopping off in an internet cafe long enough to post me a picture of first mate Keith, from the catamaran excursion he went on. Everyone is having such interesting adventures.
So, now I'm off to read a little more James, and perhaps some Spinoza and Liebnitz. Immanence and transcendence. That's what it's all about now. Or something.
