Proust writes to Anna de Noailles

a Letter in 1904, praising the line, "I see life blue, yellow and violet" as the most beautiful in la comtesse's novel, Le Visage émerveillé, along with the line about the begonias in October.  This is Anna, not Ned Rorem's and the Baron de Redé's beloved Marie-Laure, vicomtesse de Noailles. I know; it's confusing.

The view from the 5 Freeway, north of L.A.

So in my dream last night I have left my car on a downhill on-ramp to do something and I look back and there it goes, rolling onto the freeway and into traffic.  I give chase, wondering why I got out in the first place -- did I go to that newsstand for a paper?  To ask directions?  -- and then I find my car -- which is a VW Beetle not my pick-up truck -- totaled in a pile of overturned semis and wrecked big rigs.  How am I going to explain this?  That I wasn't even here when it happened?  And where's the State Highway Patrol and everybody?  It does not occur to me to disavow knowledge or deny responsibility until I wake up.

What does it mean?  I finished reading Tolle's "New Earth" last night.  In my dream I am trying to use the payphone at the newsstand which is oddly enough right next to the freeway to try and talk to D. to ask him what to do about my car.  Should I call Triple A for a tow-truck?  D. is right about the last two chapters of the book, they really are the best part.  But I didn't find the writing dry or pedantic.  I think maybe the association with Oprah makes people want to find fault, or else being on the NYT Bestseller List makes them suspicious.  But I remember this view out the truck window coming back to L.A. last fall, and the sprawl of five bedroom 3 bath homes as far as the eye could see, and all the subprime and adjustable rate mortgages they seemed to represent, not to mention what we manage to do to a landscape -- I mean, this is what a housing bubble looks like, this is what Ego does, this is what I guess some foks mean when they talk about God giving Man dominion over the earth, right? -- and I'm just wondering if a new consciousness isn't in order.  Seriously.  What colors would la comtesse de Noailles call this kind of life?  Would a new consciousness be such a bad idea?
