The Mayan

Devoting much of his life to the study of Mayan civilization, the archaeologist Edward Herbert Thompson proceeds to dredge the Cenote Sagrado in 1904. [Source].

There is something exhilarating about riding along with a photographer through downtown Los Angeles at night with the windows down while she drives and shoots at the same time.  It is exhilarating the way running into freeway traffic might be if you don't get hit.  It is a little like the fun parts of Vicky Cristina Barcelona -- the Penelope Cruz/Javier Bardem/Scarlett Johansson in the photography darkroom parts.

Friday nights at The Mayan are Salsa nights. [See Club Mayan website].

The significance of the Mayan civilization to devotees of 1904 will be clear [1904 Entry].

I must tell you that the effect of the red lighting at night, coming upon the scene as we did -- which is to say at a fairly brisk clip and with possibly insufficient attention to valet attendants in the street -- was breathtaking.

Of my friend the photographer/driver, as P.G. Wodehouse once wrote of the Vicomte de Blissac in Hot Water: "Even in circles which prided themselves on being a trifle rapid, the fellow's work was swift."

We are a fast crowd out here.  Wild and fast.
