The Shape of Retail

In 1904 Gordon Selfridge abruptly quits his position at Marshall Field's in Chicago and two years later opens his own department store in London. [Source]

Gordon Selfridge, you will remember, enjoyed the company of the Dolly Sisters at the gambling table.  Meanwhile, there are some more stores closing near you.  Look for liquidation and GOB sales at:

Mervyns
Shoe Pavilion
Sharper Image
Linens 'N Things
Wickes Furniture
Whitehall Jewellers
McMahan's Furniture

Of course this incomplete list does not include companies who are shutting down their low-performing stores, like Circuit City and others.  As for corporate layoffs -- like bank failures, the list is too long to include here.

"By your fruits shall ye be known," my mother used to say when I'd made a mess of things.  She was always quoting either Shakespeare or the Bible or one of the Wesleys (the Trinity: John, Charles, Susannah).  But you have to admit, it's hard to get around the evidence when you've been caught red-handed.  Unless you've been blinded by the right.  I think contemplating the state of the economy right before you cast your ballot is a good thing.

This is the legacy of the current regime's economic policies.  This is what 8 years of their rule hath wrought.

I think that's ridiculous. We're smarter than that, right? We've learned not to light those matches until we've crossed enemy lines.

it's 9 48 am, 11/04. i voted a few weeks ago so i'm relieved of long lines. however, that leaves hours to kill before the end of the night. feel like i might topple, headless, onto the sidewalk.
let's hope it goes our way.
