Been Around the World

A morning cruise.

Gloria came round for tea yesterday and taught me Instagram.  Dangerous, teaching me these things, but Gloria has been around the world a few times.  She also sends me little treasures and instructional pamphlets like the Cunard world cruise catalogue for 1928 or the meditations of Gerald Heard who was a friend and mentor to people like Clare Boothe Luce, Bill Wilson and Christopher Isherwood (1904-1986).  Sometimes she encloses notes on writing paper from the Chateau Marmont, or the Ritz.

How often I want to go around the world is a matter of some internal debate.  Often or not at all, depending on my mood.  Gloria is Celia in the series of cautionary tales I'm writing.  I'm deep into Book Three in which Celia has yet to come on the scene.  As you might imagine, it's a tricky spot the characters are in at present.  "Where are they now?" Gloria/Celia asks.

"Sam's in a terrible fix," I explain.  "Pam's on a cruise in the Greek Islands on her father's yacht with a crew of gorgeous young men.  Several of the recurring characters are in rehab.  I fear Sam is about to do something really ill-advised, and you have not yet arrived to stop him and save the day."

"But I will, soon, yes?"  she asks.

"I hope so," I say.  "But I'm really not sure what happens next."

"Let it percolate," Gloria advises.  "You''ll find out soon enough."

And this morning?  I wake up and I do know.

Now to work.
